Institutional editorial

Three projects for the Córdoba Ministry of Education and for Fundación Arcor, done with a studio partner. Most of the work was art direction rather than layout. We read the material, decided what each piece needed, and commissioned the illustration to other artists, so that a lot of separate pieces would come out looking like one thing.

Statistical yearbooks

The Ministry had the numbers and nothing else. Spreadsheets and tables, a full year of education statistics with no way into them. We proposed reading the material in layers, from the most superficial to the deepest, so that a reader could enter at whatever level they wanted and stop there. Analysis, synthesis, charts and highlights sit next to the tables instead of replacing them, and every chapter carries its own palette so the educational levels can be told apart. The typefaces are all open source, Open Sans, Cambria and Lora.

Copies of the yearbook stacked, one of them open on a spread of bar charts
A spread with a headline, a short analysis, a donut chart and a full data table A spread where the key figures are set large and in colour next to the full table A spread with a map of Córdoba by department next to the matching table The chapter palettes, shown as pairs of coloured circles

One palette per chapter, one chapter per educational level. It is the fastest way to know where you are in a book that is mostly tables.

Institutional report

The report used to run long. Budget turned it into a fold-out of a few pages, so whatever impact it had left had to come from the image and not from the extension. That year we worked it in collage, cut paper made by hand, closer to play than to a statistics report. There was a digital version as well.

The cover of the 2017 activity report, with photography and cut-paper figures The digital version on a tablet and a phone, with the figures set inside coloured circles
A child doing a handstand, built from cut paper
Every figure in the report was cut and assembled by hand before it was photographed.

Revista Saberes

A quarterly magazine of essays and reporting on education in the province. Text, mostly, and nothing in it that illustrates itself. The work was art direction. We read each piece, decided what it needed, and commissioned the illustration to different artists. What holds a magazine like that together is the register, and the one we chose came from school itself, drawing and notebooks and things made by hand.
